Imagine ten farmers. Each farms for 10 hours a day.

One day, one of the farmers invents a machine that assists with the farming, reducing each farmer’s workload to 9 hours a day. Is the machine a great invention that the farmers should utilize?

Not necessarily. If building the machine, generating electricity for it, maintaining it, etc. requires an aggregate, average of more than 10 hours a day, then it will have created additional work for the farmers.

We live in a very advanced society. And in an advanced society, we have the technology/option to work less. But we don’t.
